Difference between TD and PVD treatment of automobile stamping die

With the improvement of automobile production capacity and the rapid development of automation, the demand for commercial stamping dies is getting higher and higher, which requires that the dies can stably produce high-quality products. The traditional dies without surface treatment are prone to problems such as galling and insufficient lubrication, which is unfavorable for improving production capacity and service life of the dies. This requires corresponding treatment of the die surface. At present, TD and PVD treatments are widely used in stamping die surface treatment, which can improve the hardness, strength, wear resistance and lubricity of the die surface.

Temperature of treatment and deformation of workpiece after treatment: Because the temperature of TD treatment is about 1000°C and that of PVD treatment is about 500°C, the deformation of workpiece after TD treatment is larger than that of PVD treatment. The deformation of PVD treatment is small, even small workpieces have no deformation (generally controlled at 0.02MM).

Requirements for the body material and pretreatment of the workpiece to be treated: PVD treatment requires higher purity of the parent material of the workpiece than TD treatment. If the parent material of the workpiece is impure, PVD treatment will fail directly. Generally, the workpiece that needs TD treatment does not require pre-heat treatment, but only needs heat treatment before TD (quenching and tempering treatment) for the mold. Before PVD treatment, the workpiece must be subjected to very formal heat treatment (quenching and tempering treatment), and the quality of this pre-heat treatment directly affects the effect of PVD treatment.

Comparison of bonding strength between coating and workpiece after two treatments: According to the two treatment processes, TD belongs to intermolecular bonding, while PVD treatment belongs to mechanical bonding, in other words, the bonding strength between TD coating and workpiece is greater than PVD treatment. TD coating is more durable.

Two treatments are applicable to parts and whether they can be peeled off and redone after failure: TD is generally applicable to parts with material thickness greater than 1.2MM and yield strength greater than 400, PVD is generally applicable to parts with material thickness less than 1.2mm, TD can be peeled off and redone up to 3 times if it fails in the later period, and it can be peeled off and redone unlimited times after PVD fails.

Of course, there are many differences in details between the two treatments, including the same treatment, and the effects of different manufacturers are different. Our stamping dies need surface heat treatment, most of which are stretch-formed flanging dies, and the workpiece materials are generally CR12MOV,SKD11,DC53,D2 and so on. Which method can be selected according to the production program of the vehicle model or the internal demand of the company.
